There is a good chance that you are thinking of spending this holiday season with your loved ones, and for many of us that includes our pets. But, while we may enjoy decorating our Christmas tree or socializing at a family gathering, most pets are not able to partake in these activities. There are, however, plenty of holiday activities that you can enjoy with your pet!
Get Creative with Your Pets
During this time of year many of us are baking, crafting, and trying to think of the perfect gifts for others. There is no reason your pets can’t join you in this activity.
Put together a card for a special someone – Your pet can take part in your holiday cards. Feature them in a festive photo or use non-toxic paint to make colored paw prints on your card. Everyone will enjoy seeing your furry family members.
Bake some special pet treats – Baking doesn’t need to be limited to people food. Let your pet join you in the kitchen to whip up a Doggie Christmas Cake, Gingerbread Bones, or Fish-Tive Holiday Kitty Pretzels.
Make an ornament – A special ornament using your pet’s paw print can be a great way to remember the year and makes a sentimental keepsake for years to come. They can make great gifts for family members as well.
Spread Some Holiday Cheer
The holidays are the perfect time to remember others. Your pet may enjoy going to visit someone like an elderly family member or sick neighbor, and chances are seeing a furry face (perhaps wearing reindeer antlers?) will make that person’s day as well.
Well-behaved dogs might join you caroling or going for a ride to donate items to a local animal shelter or food bank.
Take in the Holiday Season with Your Pets
During the holiday season it is easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle. Make a point to slow down and enjoy yourself, including your pets when possible. Think about:
- Taking a night-time stroll or drive with your dog to enjoy the Christmas decorations.
- Curling up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa with your pet to enjoy a favorite holiday movie.
- Letting your pet play with wrapping paper rolls and crumpled scraps while you wrap gifts (don’t let them ingest string or ribbon).
- If the weather allows, play in the snow with your dog. Bundle up and have fun making snow angels and throwing snowballs.
- Take your pet for pictures with Santa.
The holidays are a great time to bond with your pet. Be sure to include them in the fun to create some fabulous memories that will last a long time to come.
