Parasite Prevention for Dogs and Cats

APPOINTMENT

Parasites are more than an annoyance. Fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, heartworms, intestinal worms, ear mites, and other pests can cause discomfort, illness, and—in some cases—life-threatening disease. Some can also spread diseases that affect people.

Year-round parasite prevention helps protect your pet both inside and outside the home. Even indoor pets can encounter parasites carried indoors on clothing, shoes, other animals, or mosquitoes.

Union Lake Veterinary Hospital offers a variety of parasite preventatives for dogs and cats. Many popular products are kept on hand at our hospital, while additional options can be ordered through our convenient online pharmacy and shipped directly to your home.

Our veterinary team can help you choose the right preventative—or combination of preventatives—based on your pet’s age, weight, health history, lifestyle, and exposure risks.

Parasites

Heartworms

  • Heartworm larvae are transmitted by a bite from an infected mosquito. Adult heartworms can grow up to a foot long inside a dog’s heart.
  • Heartworm disease can kill a dog. Heartworms can damage a dog’s heart, lungs, and kidneys over time.

Ticks

  • Ticks transmit at least 15 different diseases to dogs, including Lyme disease.
  • They can be active year-round–even in the winter. For example, deer ticks search for a host any time winter temperatures are above freezing.

Fleas

  • Fleas can cause skin and allergy problems, itching, sores, and inflammation, making life miserable for pets.
  • Eggs can hatch in as little as 1 day, causing an infestation in your home. Clearing them out can take a lot of time and money.

Intestinal Worms

  • These parasites grow inside the intestines; puppies are often more vulnerable.
  • They may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
  • Infected dogs can contaminate the home and yard, putting other pets at risk.

Parasite Prevention Prescriptions

Many parasite preventatives require a veterinary prescription and may require a current examination, heartworm test, or other screening before use. ULVH can prescribe appropriate preventatives and we keep the following products available for our patients.

Because no single product is right for every pet, please talk with your veterinarian before beginning or changing your pet’s parasite-prevention plan.

A valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship and current examination may be required before we can approve prescription medications. Dogs may also need current heartworm testing before beginning or renewing certain heartworm preventatives.

Which Parasite Preventative Is Best for My Pet?

The best preventative depends on more than convenience. Our veterinarians consider factors such as:

  • Your pet’s age, weight, species, and health
  • Indoor and outdoor exposure
  • Travel, boarding, daycare, hiking, and hunting activities
  • Exposure to mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and wildlife
  • Previous parasite infections
  • Medication sensitivities or neurologic history
  • Whether a topical, chewable, or long-lasting injection works best for your household

Some pets need more than one product to receive appropriate flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal-parasite protection. We will help you develop a plan that provides the necessary coverage without unnecessarily duplicating medications.

Ask About Manufacturer Rewards and Special Offers

Manufacturer rebates and rewards may be available on qualifying purchases of certain parasite preventatives. Offers, eligibility requirements, and expiration dates can change, so please ask our team about current savings when purchasing your pet’s medication.
